What To Expect After Hair Transplant Operation at Essi

  • Just after the hair transplant operation, you will have a bandage over your donor area and hair band at your forehead to prevent swelling on your face. The scabs will be seen at the transplanted area until around 10 days. Our advice for our patients is to try to sleep with an upright angle to prevent the risk of swelling on the face at the first night.

    First Night After Hair Transplant

  • You will be having a post-op consultation by your surgeon along with the hair washing procedure. In some patients, we leave the booster treatment to the second day, your surgeon will be giving you the necessary info.

  • The transplanted grafts will be getting used to the new roots, they will not fall by touching. However, we advise our patients to avoid scratching, hitting to solid objects etc. Avoid direct sun exposure.
    First Week Care
  • Around 10 days after the hair transplantation, the scabs disappear, so people will not understand that you have undertaken an operation. Generally, between 2-8 weeks (up to 12 weeks), you will see your transplanted hair will be falling out. This is totally normal and it is called shock hair loss, where it is a part of the process of your grafts getting used to new roots.

  • Around 4th month, your new hair growth will increase. At the end of 6 month, you will be seeing around 50% of your hair transplantation result.
    3-6 Months
  • Your new hair will be growing and becoming thicker. Although final results are very individual, we generally see a 90% result at the end of the first year. In most cases, we see 100% result end of month 15. In some patients, we see that the end results are improving until around month 18.

Hair loss is %90 due to the androgenetic origin which is a combination of androgenic hormones and family history of baldness. Stress, hormonal imbalances (pregnancy, child-birth, menapouse), some diseases (thyroid diseases, iron deficiency anemia, diabetes…), some drugs (chemotherapeutics), aging, burns, local diseases (fungal or bacterial scalp infections), trauma, smoking, nutrition imbalances are the other causes of hair loss.
The procedure is performed under local anaesthesia. Once the skin is anaesthetized, no other pain or discomfort is experienced during the procedure.
We use Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) method, which is the most advanced technique in hair transplantation. Hair follicles are taken from the donor region (occiput, left or right side of the head) and transplanted into the bald region one by one. This method is invasive and painless. Local anaesthetic is used to ensure that the patient is comfortable during the process. Thanks to developed technology, the follicle is taken one by one with the punching device which does not leave any mark afterward. Then, follicles are implanted in the bald region with special tweezers and scalpel. This method ensures that follicles are implanted very close one to another in the way that natural direction is preserved, so it looks natural, without scars.
This technique is the most utilized technique in the hair transplantation. The FUE technique allows patients to travel the next day after the surgery, and to return to his/her daily routine. Also, the FUE does not leave any scars, and hair starts to grow in a natural way. The donor area will not be damaged. Therefore, nobody will notice that you went under hair transplantation surgery.

There are some advantages and disadvantages of both methods. But briefly, in FUE method, neither a surgical skin incision nor an excision is performed at the donor site of the scalp. And unlike FUT (strip) method, no linear scar remains at the donor area because no open wound occurs and no suture is needed to close the wound. In a wide donor area, up to 5000 follicular units can be removed and transplanted in one session of FUE method. So our doctors’s answer is FUE is the much better technique.

Follicular unit extraction (FUE) is the method of hair transplant procedure in which a micromotor is used to make small, circular incisions in the skin around a follicular unit, separating it from the donor area. Depending on person, your surgeon should choose to work with a DHI pen while planting the grafts.
First, you come to the clinic and have brief consultation with our doctor. Additionally, some administrative issues will be done. Then, the donor area will be shaved bald and then the extraction begins. During the surgery, shorter and longer breaks are possible. After the extraction, the hair implantation is done.

This method could be utilized on anyone with an adequate quantity and quality of donor area, either on men or women (aged 20-60 years). It is also possible to utilize this method on eyebrows, beard, and every type of hair. Hair transplantation is not possible when the bald region is too big. It is not possible to know if you are a good candidate before you schedule a consultation with the doctor.

We highly recommend you to stop smoking as this will influence the healing process. Medication could also affect the healing process. Medication such as aspirine and certain anti-inflammatory drugs prevent the blood from clotting, which is not good for the healing process.
We recommend that you take at least two full days off. Please bear in mind that there will be some swelling and scabbing. Swelling is not something everyone experiences, however scabbing is visible for all patients. It’ll take 7 to 10 days for scabbing to disappear.

The new hairline will be seen immediately. The transplanted hair will expected to be fall out around 2-4 weeks. Then, around 3-4 months after operation, the new hair becomes usually visible at the surface of the scalp. In some patients, new growth hair may occur around 8 weeks though, so it could be taken as an individual experience.
In general, results are visible at 6 months. The new hairs grow at the same rate they grew in their original location, which is typically 0.5 inch per month. The final results are expected to be seen around 12 months.

The hairs in the transplanted grafts drop between the 2nd and 8th week following the procedure. In some cases these hairs fall out along with the pinpoint crusts that form in the grafted area; occasionally they persist longer. The grafts are usually bare for 10-14 weeks after the procedure while the follicles recuperate to produce new, permanent, growing hair.

For your first night home after surgery, sleep in a semi-upright position and use a couple of pillows to elevate your head to block the swelling effect after the surgery.

In the first 8-12 weeks following a hair transplantation, small lesions like pimples can be seen on transplanted area. This is totally normal and there’s no need to panic. These pimples will disappear in couple of weeks. The reason behind this is that your new hair is trying to go out of your skin against the skin barrier. They usually disappear on their own, without requiring any treatment.

Good thing about the FUE hair transplant method is that it’s a gradual process. If people don’t see you in first 10 days, where you have scabs, they won’t understand you had hair transplant because it’s a process of up to 12-15 months. So, the people around you won’t say `hey, great hair transplant!`, they will just say `there’s something different about you, is it a new shirt?`.

After the surgery, the patient is able to go home and continue with her/his daily activities. However, we do advise our patients to rest in the next few days, and to avoid sweating. The patient also should not scratch the transplanted region to avoid infections. In the next 14 days, the patient should avoid physical activities and exposure to any kind of heat source (sun, solarium, sauna etc.). It is very important to avoid any chemicals such as hair colour and hair spray one month after the surgery. There is no bandage nor threads. If the patient uses medicals s/he should consult with the doctor. Additionally, information about proper hair care will be given by doctor.

We advise you to wait at least 1 month for the scissor or clipper. If you would like to use razor blade, our recommendation is to wait at least 6 months to get the best result.
